Question 1

What is a firm mattress?

Accepted Answer

A firm mattress is one that offers noticeable resistance when you lie down, keeping the body closer to the surface rather than letting it sink in. On the common 1-to-10 firmness scale, firm mattresses generally fall around 7 to 8. They are available in every construction, including innerspring, hybrid, and memory foam, so firmness describes the feel of the mattress rather than what it is made of.

Question 2

Who should sleep on a firm mattress?

Accepted Answer

Firm mattresses tend to work best for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and people with a heavier body type who need extra support to keep the hips from dipping too low. Sleepers who prefer to feel on top of the bed rather than cradled by it usually like a firm feel as well. Side sleepers and lighter individuals often find a firm mattress creates pressure at the shoulders and hips, so a medium or plush option may suit them better.

Question 3

Is a firm mattress better for back pain?

Accepted Answer

A firm mattress can help some people with back discomfort because it keeps the spine in a more neutral position, especially for back and stomach sleepers. That said, firmer is not automatically better, and a mattress that is too hard can create pressure points and stiffness. Many people find a medium firm mattress offers the best balance of support and comfort, so it helps to test a few feels in person before deciding.

Question 4

What is the difference between a firm mattress and a medium firm mattress?

Accepted Answer

The main difference is how much give the surface has. A firm mattress has very little sink and feels solid from the moment you lie down, while a medium firm mattress adds a slightly softer comfort layer over a supportive core. Medium firm is the most popular feel because it suits a wide range of sleep positions, whereas a true firm mattress is a more specialized choice for people who want maximum support.

Question 5

How do I know if a firm mattress is right for me?

Accepted Answer

The best way to know is to lie on a firm mattress in your usual sleep position for several minutes and pay attention to your shoulders, hips, and lower back. If your spine feels straight and nothing is pressing uncomfortably, the firmness is probably a good match. Mattress Warehouse stores offer the bedMATCH diagnostic system, which measures your body and recommends a support level, so you can compare firm mattresses with confidence.
